Barbara Kirschten is special counsel at Wilmer Hale, whose practice focuses on the tax and non-tax aspects of nonprofit organizations.

Ms. Kirschten has extensive experience incorporating and obtaining recognition of tax-exempt status for nonprofit organizations and creating affiliates in foreign countries; advising nonprofit organizations with respect to mergers and reorganizations, unrelated business income tax issues, lobbying rules, the private foundation rules, charitable solicitation issues, and the obligations of directors and officers. She also has handled IRS audits and controversy work involving the potential revocation of tax-exempt status.

A member of the New York and District of Columbia Bars, Barbara is also a former member of the Steering Committee of the District of Columbia Bar Association Taxation Section and a former Chair, Exempt Organizations Committee. She is the author of The Nonprofit Corporation Forms Handbook.
